Police in Texas say ‘armed citizen’ shot robbers at fast-food restaurant, killing 1 suspect

Texas authorities say an armed customer intervened during the attempted robbery of a fried chicken fast food restaurant, fatally wounding one gunman and sending a second suspect struck by gunfire to the hospital.

Port Arthur police responded around 8:45 p.m. Friday to an aggravated robbery happening at the Church’s Chicken location at 1849 Jefferson Drive. Detectives learned that two suspects armed with handguns were robbing the restaurant, but an armed citizen intervened and a shootout ensued.

“Several shots were fired and both suspects were struck,” the Port Arthur Police Department said in a press release. “The suspects fled the scene and were later located by police officers.”

One of the suspects was later pronounced dead at an area hospital, police said. The second was located at Normandy Apartments, KFDM reported, and was brought to the emergency room for treatment.

The armed citizen remained at the scene, was questioned by detectives and then released. The incident is still under active investigation by Port Arthur Police’s Criminal Investigations Division. It happened just a day after another armed robbery at a Jack in the Box in the same town, Port Arthur Police Chief Tim Duriso told KFDM it was not immediately clear whether the same two suspects were responsible.

OSBI investigating after intruder shot and killed during burglary at Guthrie home

GUTHRIE, Okla. (KFOR) – A deadly shooting occurred early Friday morning just north of the metro. A homeowner opened fire on an intruder inside his home and now the search is on for at least one other suspect who got away.

“Where are you at right now?” said the 911 dispatcher.

“I’m hunkered down in the living room,” the homeowner said.

“What’s going on?” the 911 dispatcher said.

“Burglary. A person has been shot,” said the homeowner. “Oh my God.”

This call came into Logan County dispatch early Friday morning.

“Can you hurry?” said the homeowner.

“Yes sir. I’ve got people headed that way already,” the 911 dispatcher said.

Norman man shot while inside home, police believe incident connected to string of shootings into homes
The homeowner called for help, saying more than one person had broken into his home and that he opened fire on the intruders.

“I shot the other person,” said the homeowner.

“Where did you shoot one of the burglars?” said the 911 dispatcher.

“I think the upper right shoulder,” said the homeowner.

“Where in the house did you shoot them?” said the 911 dispatcher.

“Living room,” said the homeowner.

A Guthrie-area burglary ended with one of the two suspects shot and killed.
The shooting happened at a rural Logan County home just southwest of Guthrie.

“The homeowner reported there were multiple people. At least two, maybe three, that he could hear in his home,” said Brook Arbeitman, Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation.

“He retrieved his gun and fired his weapon at the intruders. It was 2:30. It was dark. As soon as he fired his gun, he called 911 to report the incident.”

The gunfire struck one woman who was pronounced dead at the scene.

A nearby neighbor told KFOR the owner had noticed things missing from the house and chose to stay the night.

The 911 call confirmed previous burglaries.

“They’ve pilfered this place numerous times, stealing everything, everything I’ve got,” said the homeowner.

Items were left lying in the grass outside the home, including a small dirt bike by the road, believed to be left by one of the burglars.

OSBI is leading the investigation, still searching for the others involved.

“Nobody is in custody at this point,” Arbeitman said.

OSBI officials tell us they are working to identify the woman’s next of kin. Her name hasn’t been released to us yet.

ILLINOIS VALLEY BREAK-IN, ASSAULT SUSPECT HELD AT GUNPOINT BY NEIGHBORS

CAVE JUNCTION, Ore. — A man who broke into a woman’s home and attacked her in front of her child late Tuesday night was detained and held at gunpoint by neighbors until deputies arrived, according to the Josephine County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies received reports of an assault and shots fired in the 700-block of Caves Highway just after midnight. Upon arrival, the deputies found 31-year-old Justin Thurman being held at gunpoint by several neighbors.

According to the Sheriff’s Office investigation, Thurman forced his way into a home in along Caves Highway. Once inside, he assaulted a woman in front of her child, stole property from her home, then tried to get away in a pickup truck.

While the man was driving off through the yard, he reportedly hit a parked car, smashed into a children’s play structure, then crashed into another house on the property and damaged it.

As Thurman continued trying to get away, the Sheriff’s Office said that a neighbor confronted him with a gun and shot out the tires on his truck to disable it. A group of neighbors then forced him out of the pickup and held him at gunpoint until deputies arrived.

The Sheriff’s Office said that Thurman, who knew the female victim, was arrested and taken to the Josephine County Jail on two counts of Burglary I and single counts of Attempted Assault IV, Attempted Assault III, Criminal Mischief I, Criminal Mischief II, Criminal Mischief II, DUII, Reckless Endangerment, and Reckless Driving.

Anderson woman shoots and kills man suspected of breaking into her home

ANDERSON, Ind. — An Anderson woman shot and killed a man suspected of breaking into her home overnight.

911 dispatchers received a call from a female homeowner in the 1300 block of E. 8th Street around 12:47 a.m. The woman told police there was a break-in at the home, and she shot the suspected burglar.

By the time police arrived, they found the alleged suspect dead in an upstairs bedroom.

With home surveillance cameras rolling, prosecutors insist a man forced his way into the woman’s home.

Prosecutors ‘insist‘ ?

“Neighbors had videos of him parking in front of the residence and looking through windows, ultimately breaking through the door and pulling a weapon out,” said Madison County Prosecutor Rodney Cummings.

Prosecutor Cummings says the suspect could also be heard on video asking for money and pretending to be law enforcement.

“There was audio, and you could hear what he was saying inside. He said, ‘It’s the police.’ He was claiming to be police officer, but he had a mask on,” said Cummings.

After retreating upstairs, police claim the homeowner shot the suspect then ran to a neighbor’s house, and police were called.

Police ‘claim‘ ?

“You know seeing it a few houses down, it’s unnerving for sure,” said neighbor Anthony Alfarano.

Anthony lives along 8th street and carries a firearm himself.  He believes, if the case is proven to be a home invasion, the woman had a right to defend her home and her children.

“Self protection is your right in your home,” said Alfarano.

“Inside a person’s house they can use deadly force, and that’s called the castle doctrine,” said attorney Mario Massillamany.

Attorney Massillamany, who isn’t involved with the case, also points out state lawmakers recently expanded the castle doctrine to provide even greater civil and criminal protections to homeowners.

“The castle doctrine in Indiana is a pretty strong law. You do not have a duty to retreat,” said Massillamany.

“In your home is probably the most protected place you can be,” said Cummings. “If you’re breaking into someone’s home in the middle of the night, if you don’t get shot or killed you should feel fortunate.”

For their part, Anderson police did not want to comment on the shooting but say the case remains an active investigation.

The Madison County coroner later identified the man killed as 40-year-old Jeffery Flowers.

The scene is just a few block south of Anderson University, although there is not believed to be a connection.

Fatal shooting at Victoria apartments occurred during home invasion

A Victoria [Texas]apartment shooting that left one man dead occurred as he and a group of people attempted to force their way into a resident’s home, authorities said Friday.

The resident, who was injured in the shooting, exchanged gunfire with the group, and the group fled the scene before police arrived, according to a Victoria Police Department news release.

It is unclear how many people were involved in the shooting or whether they were associated with the resident. Department spokeswoman Lauren Meaux declined to answer those questions, citing an ongoing investigation.

The man found dead at the scene by police was identified as Jacob Escobedo, 19, of Brady. Escobedo was part of the group that attempted to force their way into the home, Meaux said.

The resident, who was identified as Keanu Sanchez, 25, of Victoria, suffered injuries authorities determined were not life-threatening, according to a department news release.

On Tuesday at 6:54 p.m., police were dispatched to Victoria Place Apartments, 701 E. Airline Road after receiving calls about gunshots in the area. After arriving just minutes later, they discovered Escobedo’s body and Sanchez, who was injured.

An autopsy conducted by the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office determined Escobedo’s cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds.

No arrests had been made in the case as of Friday evening.

Meaux declined to disclose Sanchez’s current condition.

“This is an active and ongoing investigation. Additional information is not available at this time,” Meaux said.

Meaux said investigators think the shooting was an isolated incident.

Intruder shot, killed inside Midtown Atlanta apartment

An intruder was shot and killed late Wednesday inside a Midtown Atlanta apartment after a resident came home and discovered him, officials said.

Investigators remained at the scene into Thursday afternoon at The Mark Atlanta apartments on Spring Street, which is near the Midtown MARTA station and marketed as student housing. According to Atlanta police, officers were called to the complex about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday after shots were fired.

They located a man with a gunshot wound who was pronounced dead at the scene.

“At this time, the incident has been classified as a death investigation and homicide investigators are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident,” police spokesman Sgt. Jarius Daugherty said Thursday morning.

A spokesperson for Landmark Properties said the shooting occurred after a tenant came home and found someone inside his unit.

“The resident confronted the intruder, who was shot and killed,” Kelly Gray told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, adding that no other injuries were reported. “Landmark Properties takes all acts of violence of this nature very seriously and our team is fully cooperating with local authorities in their investigation into this incident. The safety of residents and on-site staff is our primary concern and we have a zero-tolerance policy for criminal activity on our property.”

Daugherty said the shooter remained at the scene and cooperated with police. He was questioned by investigators and later released. Authorities have not released the name of the man killed.

Officials say the homeowner had a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his hand and that the other man was found near the entrance to the home with several gunshot wounds.

Police took both men to the hospital. The man who entered the home died.

The Circuit Attorney’s office refused charges of second-degree murder and armed criminal action citing self-defense.

Juvenile cites self-defense after killing man with arrow

DITTMER, Mo. (AP) — Authorities in eastern Missouri are investigating the death of a 40-year-old theft suspect killed by an arrow shot by a juvenile, who said the man came at him menacingly.

Jefferson County Sheriff Dave Marshak on Tuesday announced details of the incident that happened Friday near the town of Dittmer. The man killed was identified as Michael Stotts of Dittmer.

An attorney for the juvenile’s family told authorities that the juvenile was walking to a tree stand to hunt deer with a bow and arrow. He allegedly saw Stotts trying to steal a lawn tractor and wood splitter.

The juvenile called his father, who arrived and confronted Stotts. Authorities say that during the confrontation, Stotts ran toward the juvenile.

The attorney said the juvenile warned Stotts several times. When Stotts didn’t stop, the juvenile fired the arrow.

The sheriff’s department said the property has been the site of several recent thefts.

69-year-old woman shoots, kills home intruder in North Olmsted
NORTH OLMSTED, Ohio (WOIO) – A 21-year-old woman was shot and killed after police said she forced her way into a couple’s North Olmsted home.
According to the North Olmsted Police Department, the woman broke into the husband and wife’s home on Mastick Road just before 11 p.m. Sunday.
Police said the intruder fought with the 72-year-old husband. It was then that the 69-year-old wife grabbed their gun and pulled the trigger, hitting the intruder in the stomach.

Female Homeowner: “No, I shot the gun.”

9-1-1 call/Courtesy: North Olmsted PD

Police identified the intruder as Keyarra Tompkins, of Cleveland. She was taken to the hospital, where she later died.

The homeowners told police they did not know Tompkins.

The thought of this being a random act sent chills down the spine of neighbor Tatyana Wargo.

“I had goosebumps all over my body,” Wargo told 19 News.

The terrifying ordeal happened just feet from Wargo’s home, prompting her to take new precautions.

She has a Ring doorbell at her front door, but says it wasn’t active when the intruder struck her neighbor’s home.

Wargo told 19 News on Monday she planned to reactivate her subscription with Ring right away.

“I was going to do it last night, but we didn’t because we were decorating and I’m doing it today,” she said.

Police said the homeowners have not been charged and are continuing to investigate to figure out why Tompkins picked that particular home in that particular neighborhood.

Two arrested after Jefferson County homeowner shoots burglar

JEFFERSON COUNTY — The owner of a home near Festus fatally shot a man during an early morning burglary Thursday, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s office said.

Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies were called around 1:40 a.m. to the 400 block of Sequoia Drive and found a man later identified as 36-year-old Wayne D. Roam, of House Springs, lying dead on the porch, according to court documents.

The homeowner told deputies he heard a knock on his door and asked who was there. An unfamiliar voice replied, and a person was shaking the doorknob as if trying to enter the house.

The frightened homeowner got his revolver, opened the door and found two men standing on the porch with masks on, court documents said.

One of the men reached inside the home and sprayed mace. The homeowner fired his gun, ran back inside, locked the door and called 911, deputies said.

As they interviewed the homeowner later, deputies saw a Nissan SUV driving away from the area. They stopped the vehicle and questioned the driver and a front-seat passenger, court documents said.

The two men had “conflicting stories” about why they were in the area and deputies noticed the passenger’s shirt had red stains on it, believed to be blood, charging documents said.

The passenger was later identified as 29-year-old Sean Ramsey, of Festus. He and the driver were arrested on outstanding warrants at the scene.

Ramsey is now facing charges with second-degree murder because a death occurred during a crime, charges said. He was also charged with first-degree burglary and third-degree assault.

The homeowner was not arrested.

Subway employee shoots, kills suspect during attempted robbery

ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico (KOAT) — An employee fatally shot a man who attempted to rob a Subway restaurant in New Mexico, police said.

Around 5:20 a.m., officers were called to a shooting at the restaurant in Albuquerque.

“After preliminary investigation, talking to some of the employees at the business, it appears that the male had entered the business and attempted to rob one of the employees,” said APD spokesman Gilbert Gallegos. “There was an employee who was armed, that came out of the backroom, I think, to help the other employee who was being robbed.”

According to Gallegos, the Subway employee shot the suspect, killing him.

“As far as we know, the robber was armed,” Gallegos said. “Detectives are very interested in who this attempted robber is and what motived the robbery this early in the morning at this location.”

Detectives are working to identify the alleged robber and will talk to Subway employees to figure out what happened.

“It is concerning that we haven’t had, in at least a few years, an armed robbery at a restaurant or a business that turned into a homicide. And now we’ve had two in the last couple of weeks,” Gallegos said.

That deadly armed robbery happened earlier this month at Tobacco Town in northwest Albuquerque.

Tulsa’s latest 3 homicides occurred within a span of 38 hours, and each is considered justifiable

Self-defense claims are nothing new to the homicide detectives at the Tulsa Police Department, but to have three in a row that appear to be legitimate is, at the least, “strange.”

And to know the three killings were carried out in a mere 38 hours might just be something new — even to detectives who have spent more than a decade in the unit, Tulsa Police Lt. Brandon Watkins said.

“There’s a lot of people who claim self-defense,” Watkins said. “That’s usually the first refuge that people go to when they come in, but we look at the evidence.

“On these three cases, the evidence was compelling.”

The cases make up the 35th, 36th and 37th homicides to occur in Tulsa this year, according to Tulsa World records. Two of the victims died of gunshot wounds, and the third died after being stabbed; all in separate occurrences at the beginning of September.

Detectives released the names of the latter two victims on Thursday after previously releasing that of the first, which occurred about 4:15 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 2.

It was a shooting call in the 2100 block of North Hartford Avenue, and victim Isaac Weeks was found with a gunshot wound to his chest. He died at a hospital.

The 40-year-old had been at a birthday party thrown in his honor all throughout the day before, Watkins said, and he was likely intoxicated when he began waving a gun around in the wee hours of the night. His actions prompted a couple of guests to leave, but Weeks followed them and reportedly pointed his gun at a man, who shot him.

Watkins said the encounter was caught on surveillance footage, and the shooter turned himself in shortly afterward and was questioned before being released.

Police received another call later that evening: A homeowner shot and killed a man he said broke into his home, stole his belongings and attacked him.

The resident told police he received an alert that someone was attempting to break into his house in the 900 block of South Allegheny Avenue, and when he arrived at the address, he found a man later identified as Stevie Ashlock carrying items from his residence.

Ashlock reportedly began attacking the homeowner with a metal object when he called 911 and attempted to keep Ashlock from leaving the property.

The homeowner shot him in the torso about 5:10 p.m., and Ashlock, 34, died at a hospital. The homeowner suffered some scrapes, Watkins said, but no great physical harm.

The next day, a fist fight outside a convenience store at 49th Street and Yale Avenue turned deadly when a man pulled out a knife and stabbed another in the neck.

Joseph Sexton, 23, died of his injuries despite fairly quick medical attention, Watkins said.

“It was just a particularly bad wound,” Watkins said, indicating Sexton suffered an arterial bleed.

Watkins said the stabber and Sexton didn’t seem to know each other, but several witnesses along with surveillance footage pointed to Sexton as being the instigator of a fight.

“We don’t really know why the fight was being picked,” Watkins said. “But from what we’ve been able to pick up in interviews with people, (Sexton) just liked to fight.”

The man tried to hold Sexton off before eventually stabbing him, Watkins said. He fled the area, leading police to track him down in the days following, but Watkins said he was questioned and released.

This year hasn’t come close to producing as many homicides as the near-record amount of homicides Tulsa saw in 2020—this time last year, 58 homicides had occurred—but case complexity-wise, there is no break in sight, Watkins said.

Five “whodunits” out of the 37 cases detectives have received are proving to be especially challenging, but the investigations are ongoing.

“We never stop,” Watkins said

Man who shot teen on RTD bus says it was in self defense

AURORA, Colo. (KDVR) — William Farnsworth has had to pull out his gun many times as a bounty hunter, but the 23-year-old said he never thought the first time he would shoot someone would be on a moving RTD bus in Aurora.

“I tried my best to defend myself before I used a weapon, and, in the end, I had to shoot him,” Farnsworth said in an exclusive interview with the Problem Solvers.

“I was losing consciousness, the man was on top of me beating me senseless and he said, ‘I’m going to kill you.’ And I told myself, ‘If you lose consciousness, he’s going to follow through with that threat,’” Farnsworth said.

Farnsworth was riding the bus July 9 with his wife and 18-month-old daughter when he said he and his wife asked a young couple on the bus to stop vaping because it’s not allowed.

“He ignored us until the third time we asked him. He stood up and he said, “F— you, f— your wife and f— your baby.’ And he started swinging at my wife and baby first, and I had to throw myself in-between them,” Farnsworth said.

Farnsworth then took out his gun and shot the unidentified teenager once in the chest.

“He said, ‘You shot me’ and walked off the bus and lied in the grass. Made no attempt to put pressure on the wound,” Farnsworth said.

“I acted in self-defense, and most of the officers on the scene told me they would’ve done the same thing,” said Farnsworth.

The Problem Solvers made a public records request for the bus surveillance video, but an RTD spokesperson told FOX31 the footage would not be released because it’s part of a pending criminal case.

However, law enforcement sources told the Problem Solvers the surveillance video backs up Farnsworth, who insisted he had no choice but to use deadly force when he was attacked.

Even though Farnsworth faces no charges, he’s been told he can’t have his Glock handgun back until the case against the teenager is adjudicated because prosecutors need the gun as evidence.

3 shot, including suspect, during dispute over tools at northern Jefferson County home

A 32-year-old man was jailed early Friday following a shooting that left three people injured in northern Jefferson County – including himself.

Brandon Scott Swack, of Morris, is accused of firing on another man during a dispute over tools.

Sheriff’s Sgt. Joni Money said the incident happened about 8:30 p.m. Thursday in the 2000 block of Paradise Valley Road.

According to Money, Swack went to the location demanding to borrow some tools.

Swack became angry when the man declined his request and left the home.
Swack, however, returned a short time later brandishing a pistol.

The victim grabbed a shotgun and when Swack raised his gun, Money said, the victim fired, striking Swack in the face.

Swack then began randomly firing his pistol, striking the victim and a female who was also at the house.

All three were taken to UAB Hospital for treatment of their injuries. Money said all are expected to recover.

Swack was booked into the Jefferson County Jail shortly after 2 a.m. Friday.

He is charged with attempted murder, first-degree theft of property and first-degree criminal mischief. His bonds total $60,000.

Possible would-be car burglar shot, killed by homeowner in Kingwood

PORTER, Texas – Montgomery County sheriff’s deputies are investigating after they said a possible would-be car burglar was fatally shot in Kingwood Thursday night.

Deputies said the deadly shooting happened in the driveway of a home located in the 22700 block of Adrift Row Lane around 9 p.m.

According to investigators, a homeowner’s motion detection camera alerted him of some activity in his driveway. Deputies say the homeowner found a 23-year-old man he didn’t know sitting in his car. The homeowner had asked the intruder to leave right before fatally shooting him, deputies said.

“As the male homeowner approached the vehicle, (he) ordered the name subject out at gunpoint,” Specialist S. Squier with Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office said. “He became aggressive, uncooperative. The suspect made the statement, ‘I will not go back to prison.’”

Deputies said as the alteration continued, the homeowner fired two shots, striking the subject who went down and was later pronounced dead.

The man’s name has not been released. Deputies said they are still trying to contact his family.

Multiple law enforcement agencies, including Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Texas Rangers and the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office, are investigating the shooting. There’s no word yet on whether the homeowner will face any charges.

Onondaga County District Attorney: Man ‘saved the lives of several individuals’ after fatally shooting man who fired at crowd

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Demetrius Jackson, the man killed in the Lodi Street shooting on Tuesday, was in possession of a loaded 9mm handgun while outside of 1808 Lodi Street, District Attorney William Fitzpatrick said.

Jackson threatened multiple people at the location and fired the loaded handgun in the direction of those people, officials said.

Another man, who was on scene and in possession of a 9mm handgun returned fire striking and killing Jackson, Fitzpatrick said.

According to Fitzpatrick, this man has a valid pistol permit for the 9mm handgun.

The District Attorney said in a statement that based on preliminary investigation, it appears the man who shot Jackson saved the lives of several individuals.

The Syracuse Police Department is still investigating the shooting.

The District Attorney’s Office is aware that the man who shot Jackson and other witnesses to the incident have received threats and suffered property damage in what they say appears to be retaliation.

Those acts are currently being investigated, Fitzpatrick said.

Homeowner shoots, kills alleged burglar who reportedly attacked him

A Tulsa homeowner shot and killed a man he said broke into his home, stole his belongings and attacked him with a metal object.

The resident told police Thursday evening that he received an alert that someone was attempting to break into his house near 11th Street and Yale Avenue and that when he arrived, he found a man carrying items from his residence.

The homeowner attempted to keep the man from leaving the property in the 900 block of South Allegheny Avenue while he called 911, but the man began attacking him with a metal object, he said.

The homeowner shot the man in the torso about 5:10 p.m., police said.

The man was taken to a hospital, where he died. His identity had not been released Friday pending notification of his next of kin.

Tulsa Police Homicide Lt. Brandon Watkins said the homeowner was not arrested, with indications that the shooting was in self-defense, but detectives planned to meet with the man and his attorney Friday.

The deceased is the 36th homicide victim in Tulsa this year; detectives worked a separate self-defense slaying earlier Thursday.
