GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Brookhaven

Brookhaven, GA (August 16, 2024) –  At the request of the Brookhaven Police Department, GBI agents are investigating an officer involved shooting in Brookhaven, GA. Albert Eugene Burns, age 19, of Snellville, GA was shot and injured in the incident. No officers were injured.

On Thursday, August 15, 2024, at about 11:00 p.m., Brookhaven PD officers responded to a home invasion call on Caldwell Road. While the homeowner was looking at her home surveillance video, she saw four armed gunmen inside her home. The homeowner contacted a friend who responded to the home and confronted the armed suspects. A shootout took place between the suspects and the homeowner’s friend. As the suspects drove off in a Lexus, a responding officer observed the car leaving the neighborhood. The officer pursued the suspects’ car into the city of Chamblee where the car wrecked near a utility pole. The four suspects got out of the car and started to run away. Burns, the driver of the car, had a gun in hand. The officer fired his gun and hit Burns. Burns dropped a gun, but continued to run. While running, he dropped a second gun. The officer shot Burns again while he was trying to pick up the gun.

Burns was taken into custody and is at a local hospital.

Dunwoody PD and Chamblee PD assisted with setting up a perimeter and K-9 search. Police located Davion Harper, age 22, of Conyers, GA, and Tyson Kamari Kirksey, age 18, of Conyers, GA and took them into custody without incident. They will be booked into the DeKalb County Jail. The fourth suspect is still at large.

Brookhaven PD is investigating the home invasion and aggravated assault.

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation into the officer’s use of force. Anyone with information about the fourth suspect’s location should contact police. Brookhaven burglary call leads to pursuit, shootout with police

1 shot during alleged armed robbery in Phoenix

PHOENIX — A teen was shot during an attempted aggravated robbery in Phoenix, the city’s police department said.

Phoenix police officers responded to the area of 35th Avenue and Indian School Road for shots fired just after 5 a.m. on Saturday. When officers got to the scene, they found a man who said he was the victim of an attempted armed robbery.

The man told police he produced his own gun and shot the suspect of the armed robbery, police said.

While police officers searched for the suspect, a teen contacted the police and said he had been shot. Police said the teen was related to the original armed robbery, but did not say in what capacity.

The teen was taken to the hospital for treatment for his gunshot wounds and was released from medical care. The injuries were non-life-threatening.

No arrests have been made and the investigation remains open.

Man shoots, kills attempted robber in North Austin: APD

AUSTIN, Texas – An attempted robbery ended in a deadly shooting in North Austin, Austin police said.

Austin police said on Wednesday, July 24, around 10:30 p.m., officers responded to a robbery at the Taste of Home Handmade Dumpling Restaurant, at 10901 N Lamar Blvd. The caller said someone tried to rob him with a knife, and he shot the attempted robber.

The investigation showed Hao Lin, 51, left the restaurant when he saw 57-year-old Chup Prum on a bike. Prum pulled out a knife and approached Hao Lin. Hao Lin then pulled out a gun and shot Prum, police said.

After being shot, Prum rode off on his bike, and went home. He later went to a local hospital and died from his injuries four days later.

No charges are being filed at this time, police said.

Self-Defense Shooting in Bullhead City Leaves One Dead After Knife-Wielding Woman Attacks Residents

Last night (8/8/24) at about 7:50 p.m., Bullhead City Police were called to the 900 block of Seafair Drive where a woman had been shot. Lucindy Gale Parkison, 49 of Bullhead City, was found deceased at the residence.

The investigation revealed that Parkison had gone to this residence to confront the residents regarding ongoing issues. She was armed with a knife and started to advance and threaten the residents. Parkison pushed one female victim against a wall. The victim had a defensive cut on her hand from Parkison’s knife when she reportedly held it to the victim’s throat. A male resident grabbed a gun and demanded she leave their property. Parkison reportedly charged at the male with her knife and she was shot multiple times. The altercation occurred in the front yard of the residence.

No arrests were made in the case. The victims were cooperative with police.

Disabled Vietnam veteran shoots, kills home intruder

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – It’s the makings of a nightmare, but when a local veteran woke up recently, it was his terrifying reality.

Danny Ricketts says a person with a knife tried to get into his window, but he was also armed. Ricketts says he grabbed the gun from his nightstand, shot the intruder, and then called police.

When police got to his apartment near San Mateo and Zuni early Monday morning, they found the intruder down the street.

Ricketts wishes it was all a bad dream.

“I looked at the window and I didn’t see any blood and I didn’t see any bodies. So I thought I missed initially and I was kind of grateful at that,” said Ricketts.

He woke up early in the morning to his bedroom window slamming.

“I could see it was a knife sticking under the window, sort of wiggling back and forth, and the window was coming up,” Ricketts said.

With his PTSD, the Vietnam War veteran keeps a weapon close by.

“I keep a pistol on my nightstand under a hat. I reached and got it and I said, I still don’t know quite what I said, ‘What the f**k you doing, get the h*ll away from here’ something like that,” said Ricketts.

Then, he fired one round and the person took off.

“This was folded in such a way the bullet went through three layers at first,” said Ricketts.

Police haven’t released the suspect’s name, but surveillance video from a neighbor shows him running by after the shooting.

Ricketts called 911, but the intruder later died in the street.

“When I was in the police car I could see in the distance the body, and I asked the detective if it was the body of the person I shot, and they said ‘Yeah’ and I felt kind of bad,” Ricketts said.

Police say, as of now, Ricketts is justified in the shooting.

“Sounds like this gentleman the other day he called police, he secured his firearm I believe, he told them exactly what happened,” APD Spokesperson Gilbert Gallegos.

KOB 4 saw another example of this in late March when police say Joseph Rivera broke into Anissa Tinnin’s Albuquerque home. She was there with her 4-year-old granddaughter. She called the police but took matters into her own hands.

Gallegos says while they can’t tell you what to do if you’re in a similar situation, they can tell you what not to do.

“We’ve seen instances too where people may have felt a fear but, and then they go chasing the individual, and continue to shoot at them. That’s where it really gets pretty questionable as to whether you’re defending your life at that point,” said Gallegos. “You can protect yourself if there’s a fear of harm or protect somebody else. You can’t protect your property by using deadly force.”

Gallegos says APD is currently investigating five other homicides in the city that are looking justified as well.

The district attorney’s office always has the final say though if charges will be filed.

Homeowner shoots man who attacked him in Mandeville area

A Mandeville [Louisiana] area homeowner shot a man who tried to attack him during an encounter outside his home, authorities said. The man who was shot will be booked on multiple counts when he is released from the hospital.

The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office said the shooting Monday morning was an act of self-defense by a homeowner who feared for his safety.

The Sheriff’s Office identified the man who was shot as Careyunius Smith of the Slidell area and said he was in stable condition, recovering at a hospital from a gunshot wound to the abdomen Thursday.

Deputies responded to a report of a shooting at a home in the 1200 block of Dove Park Road just after 9 a.m. Monday. The Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that Smith had been trespassing on the property and had attacked one of the homeowners who confronted him.

That homeowner yelled for help and the Sheriff’s Office said another owner of the home came to their aid. The second homeowner tried to get Smith to stop his attack, but he would not. The second homeowner retreated, then returned with a gun, the Sheriff’s Office said.

When Smith charged the homeowner with the gun, he fired, hitting Smith in the abdomen, authorities said.

Both homeowners then called 911. An ambulance transported Smith to the hospital.

When he is released from the hospital, Smith will be booked into the St. Tammany Parish Jail on counts of criminal trespassing, attempted simple kidnapping, simple battery and simple assault, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Overnight Chatham County shooting was in self defense; gunman not facing charges
According to Chatham County Police, officers arrested one man on multiple charges after an altercation led to the suspect being shot.

According to CCPD, officers arrested one man on multiple charges after an altercation led to the suspect being shot.

Officers were dispatched to the 2500 block of Oak Forest Drive around 10 p.m. When they arrived, witnesses said one man had come to the home uninvited, and began a verbal argument and assault on another man. The two knew each other.

As the assault continued, witnesses said the victim shot the man who attacked him.

The suspect was identified as 51-year-old Diego Holland. He is charged with battery , burglary in the 1st degree and two counts of cruelty to children in the 3rd degree.

Police say no charges are expected to be filed against the victim.

Police in Chatham County say one person has been taken to the hospital following an overnight shooting.

The Chatham County Police Department reported shortly after 11 p.m. Monday that they responded to a report of a shooting on the 2400 block of Oak Forest Drive.

One man was taken to the hospital “with potentially serious gunshot wounds,” police said in a Facebook post.

Another man was detained.

Authorities say all parties involved appear to know each other.

Resident shoots and kills man suspected of breaking into Oceanside home
Oceanside Police investigating shooting as potential self-defense incident.

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) – A resident shot and killed a man suspected in a home invasion attempt in Oceanside, according to police.

Oceanside Police said officers were dispatched to the 4100 block of Diamond Circle at around 7:22 pm. Monday due to a reported assault with a deadly weapon incident.

Police said two residents — a male and a female — were inside the house when an unknown man armed with a rock and a stick entered the backyard and then made his way through a bedroom sliding door. Police noted the female resident was in the bedroom when the intruder entered.

According to police, the intruder threw the rock at the male resident and hit him in the face.

The injured resident grabbed a gun and fired at least three shots, striking the intruder once in the chest.

Emergency responders attempted life-saving measures, but the intruder — described as a 22-year-old man — was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police at the scene told ABC 10News the resident who fired the shots was not arrested; the shooting is being investigated by the OPD’s Crimes of Violence Uni as a potential self-defense incident.

Neighbors rattled by break-in attempts, gunfire

Isabel and Matthew Cole didn’t hear the gunshots, but around 7:30 p.m. Monday night, they heard someone scream.

“We heard a scream, and we thought it was kids playing because it was really muffled. One of our neighbors came and got us and they said that someone was on the loose and they were breaking into people’s houses and backyards,” said Matthew Cole. “Everybody who lived here came outside of the house, and we were all looking around to see if the person came into our backyard, but by then, the police were already here.”

Oceanside Police said the man attempted to break into 5 to 7 homes in the neighborhood.

One of the affected residents showed ABC 10News the mess that was left behind in their backyard after a break-in attempt.

The resident said they don’t think he took anything.

Meanwhile, the Coles said it looks like the man tried to get through their back gate but wasn’t successful.

“The whole time we’ve lived here we’d go out to our car at night. We’d walk around like when he has to go potty, we take him out. So, we honestly never thought anything like that would happen around here because it’s so quiet,” said Isabel Cole.

She added, “Thinking about how close it was, I’m grateful it wasn’t us, but I feel so bad for our neighbors. I know they looked pretty spooked, and a couple of other neighbors are pretty spooked about it.”

Intruder shot and killed by homeowner on Corpus Christi’s Southside

CORPUS CHRISTI, Tx — Corpus Christi Police are investigating after a homeowner shot and killed an intruder at his home on Sunday morning around 7:51 a.m.

CCPD told KRIS 6 News that the shooting happened on the 7000 block of Brandon Drive. That’s inside the Buckingham Estates subdivision off Yorktown Blvd and South Staples Street on Corpus Christi’s south side.

Police said just before 8 a.m., they got a call from the homeowner, who said he shot an intruder who had broken into his home. When officers arrived, they found the man dead inside the home.

The homeowner is cooperating with investigators. No one else was hurt.

Houston home invasion leaves suspect in critical condition

HOUSTON – A home invasion in southwest Houston left one suspect in critical condition after shots were fired on Friday night.

According to Houston Police Department Lieutenant Riley, a woman called to report four to five men were outside her home in the 10600 block of Beechnut Street with rifles, banging on her door.

The suspects forced entry into the home and the occupants inside exchanged gunfire with the men, according to HPD.

Lt. Rile reports one suspect was hit in the head multiple times. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

No one inside the home was hurt, officials say.

HPD is investigating the incident.

Wauwatosa attempted armed robbery, shooting; man in serious condition

WAUWATOSA, Wis. – A 39-year-old man is in serious condition after being shot during an attempted armed robbery in Wauwatosa early Friday morning, July 26. The victim was pumping gas when the suspects attempted to steal his vehicle.

According to police, around 3 a.m. a Wauwatosa officer heard gunshots in the area of Mayfair and Capitol and saw a white sedan driving rapidly away from the area.

That officer initiated a vehicle pursuit that ended in a minor crash with a street sign at N. 110 Street and W. Congress Street. Multiple people ran from the vehicle.

At the same time, Wauwatosa’s 911 center received a call from an individual who reported that he had just been shot at a gas station near Mayfair and Capitol. He further reported that five suspects confronted him while he was pumping gas, and attempted to steal his vehicle. At least one of those suspects was armed.

The victim told police he was also carrying a firearm, and there was an exchange of gunfire. The suspects got into a vehicle, and fled the scene.

The 39-year-old shooting victim was treated for gunshot wounds and taken to the hospital by the Wauwatosa Fire Department. He is in serious condition. It is unknown if any of the suspects were struck by gunfire, police say.

Wauwatosa police officers, with the assistance of officers from the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office, City of Brookfield Police Department, and West Allis Police Department, searched the area for the suspects who ran from the vehicle, which had been reported stolen to the Milwaukee Police Department on July 24.

One individual believed to have fled from the vehicle was taken into custody. He has been identified as an 18-year-old Milwaukee man.

The Wauwatosa Police Department says they are working to verify that the vehicle that officers pursued is related to the robbery and shooting incident. They are also seeking witnesses and evidence from both crime scenes.

Off-duty CPD officer involved in shootout with attempted carjackers on Far South Side; COPA investigating

CHICAGO — An attempted carjacking led to a shootout between suspects and an off-duty Chicago police officer on the city’s Far South Side.

According to police, at least one suspect is in custody and the officer was not injured.

The shooting happened around 5:30 a.m. Tuesday when an off-duty officer was confronted by armed offenders in the 10800 block of S. Campbell Ave., and an exchange of gunfire ensued.

A home security camera captures a dark-colored vehicle speeding down the street, and gunfire can be heard shortly after.

Not long after the shooting occurs, the video shows an alleged suspect running from 108th and South Campbell. The suspects had just attempted to carjack an off-duty police officer, according to police.

The vehicle was shot up and a number of evidence markers and shell casings were placed around the vehicle as police investigated the scene.

A car was found abandoned not far from the shooting, and is believed to have been stolen from Lansing and used in a number of other crimes in the area.

The West Beverly neighborhood is home to a large population of Chicago firefighters and police officers.

Ald. Matt O’Shea says he knows the officer involved. He said the officer has about 25 years on the job and is a family man who coaches kids sports teams.

The alderman says more than one suspect involved ran from the scene.

Man fatally shot at Arlington Heights apartment, resident had order of protection

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (WLS) — A man died and two people are in custody after a shooting Sunday afternoon in the north suburbs.

The shooting happened at the Arbor Lakes Apartment Complex, in 4200 block of North Bloomington Avenue in Arlington Heights, police said.

Authorities said a resident called 911 just before 2 p.m. to report a man had been shot inside her apartment.

The self-admitted shooter and the resident met officers outside and were taken to a police station, authorities said.

Detectives said they’re focusing on a past relationship between the resident and the man killed as a possible contributing factor.

ABC7 was told there was an active order of protection in Cook County for the resident prohibiting the now-deceased man from contacting her.

No further information about the shooting was immediately available.

Police continue to investigate.

Seattle clerk shoots knife-wielding burglar in self-defense

SEATTLE – A man who broke into a Seattle business overnight was shot by a clerk who was asleep when the burglary occurred, according to Seattle Police.

The armed clerk fired in self-defense, as the suspect was believed to be armed with a knife.

The suspect suffered significant injuries to his hand. Police say he left a long blood trail as he fled the scene.

The break-in happened around 2 a.m. Friday at a business on Rainier Avenue South near South Adams Street, in the Mount Baker neighborhood. The clerk was apparently asleep inside the business before being woken up by the break-in.

Officers located the suspect about a block up Rainier Avenue and treated him for his gunshot wound. He was taken to Harborview Medical Center in serious condition.

The suspect remains under arrest for burglary. Police say the victim cooperated with detectives and his gun was recovered as evidence.

This incident remains under investigation.

16-year-old shot by victim during armed robbery in Soulard

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) – Police say a 16-year-old was shot in the chest as he and three other suspects attempted an armed robbery early Saturday in Soulard.

Following the incident, the male juvenile was dropped off at an area hospital where he is listed in critical condition, according to St. Louis Metropolitan Police.

Officers were dispatched around 1:30 a.m. Saturday to the area of 9th Street and Russell Avenue for a report of shots fired.

The victims, two 24-year-old men, told police they were sitting in their vehicle when they were approached by four males wearing ski masks.

Two of the suspects stood behind the vehicle brandishing a firearm, as the juvenile reached into an open vehicle window and began taking items from the victims, according to police.

When one of the suspects tried opening a passenger door, one of the victims shot the juvenile as the juvenile was reaching through the window.

The suspects then fled the scene in a white SUV. Police said the juvenile suspect was dropped off at the hospital, where officers collected a ski mask as evidence.

Police say the investigation is ongoing.

Man fatally shot after breaking into Orion Township house to attack ex-girlfriend

OAKLAND COUNTY, Mich. (FOX 2) – A 67-year-old suspect was fatally shot after breaking into a residence to attack his ex-girlfriend in Orion Township Wednesday morning.

The suspect was fatally wounded by the ex-girlfriend’s stepson inside the house, on Elkhorn Lake Road around 10 a.m. Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said.

The woman and her stepson retreated to an upstairs bedroom after Galen Gavitt broke into the residence using an ax. Once inside, the stepson – who had his own gun – barricaded the door and the woman hid in the attached bathroom.

Gavitt fired a shot through the door, causing the man, 36, to duck for cover on the floor. Gavitt came into the room, pointed a gun at the woman’s stepson and told him ‘I’m here for her’ Bouchard said.

“(Gavitt) moved towards the bathroom door, and at that point, the stepson fired one round from his weapon, which struck the assaulting suspect, who is down, deceased. So it kind of played out very quickly,” Bouchard said.

Gavitt had previously threatened to kill the woman, and already had a personal protection order and extreme risk protection order filed against him.

His ex-girlfriend had lived with him for 17 years in Tuscola County before she sought refuge in her stepdaughter’s house in Orion Township.

Gavitt broke into the home using the ax to break a basement window. Both the woman and her stepson were not injured.

Bouchard said that it appears Gavitt got his ex-wife’s weapon and took that to the Orion Township house to shoot his former live-in girlfriend. Gavitt’s own two firearms had already been confiscated from the state’s so-called Red Flag law by police in Tuscola County.

Although the investigation is ongoing, the sheriff said that the stepson’s actions appeared justified as Gavitt was going after his ex-girlfriend with a gun that he had already fired before forcing his way into the bedroom.

Bouchard said he didn’t know how the man bracing against the door was missed by the blind gunshot fired from Gavitt.

“By the grace of God,” he said. “It depends on where in the door it went through.”

Home invader shot by DeKalb County resident

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. – An alleged home invader is recovering in the hospital after police say they were shot by a DeKalb County resident early Friday morning.

Officials say the shooting happened around 4 a.m. on the 3000 block of Bedevere Circle.

Police responding to the scene found a person who had been shot.

According to investigators, it appeared like the two people involved in the shooting had gotten into a fight earlier in the evening. After they separated, police say the suspect tried to break into the home and was shot.

The allegedly wanna-be home invader is expected to survive their injuries, police say.

Officers are not charging the homeowner at this time.

ECSO investigating fatal shooting in Warrington as self-defense

A man was shot and killed during an alleged robbery at the Forest Creek Apartments in Warrington on Friday evening, according to the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office.

ECSO spokesperson Morgan Lewis told the News Journal that they are investigating the shooting as self defense.

“We don’t anticipate any charges at this time,” she told the News Journal.

Investigators discovered a video of two men getting into a confrontation with one another. The now-deceased man pulled out a firearm, and according to Lewis used it to rob the second man of his firearm.

Unbeknownst to alleged robber, the second man had another firearm and used it to shoot and kill the other individual, according to Lewis.

Lewis said the investigation remains open.

Prosecutor says deadly shooting in downtown Anderson appears to be self-defense

ANDERSON, Ind. — A deadly shooting in downtown Anderson may have been justified under the law, according to the local prosecutor.

Anderson police confirmed the shooter has not been arrested and the prosecutor said he does not expect to file any criminal charges in this case.

The violence took place just before 10 p.m. Monday in downtown Anderson.

While walking down the sidewalk along 9th Street, investigators believe a 51-year-old local businessman was playing a Pokémon-style scavenger hunt on his phone when a complete stranger ambushed him.

“Just about a block from the courthouse he was approached by a homeless person who punched him in the face and stole his cell phone,” said Madison County Prosecutor Rodney Cummings.

Cummings said that is when the robbery victim pulled out his gun in a parking lot along 9th Street and killed 43-year-old Michael Piercy, just a few hundred feet away from the Madison County Courthouse.

“Everything that’s been presented to me it looks like a very strong self-defense case,” said Cummings.

While the robbery suspect wasn’t armed at the time of the shooting, Indiana law does allow people to defend themselves from a physical attack.

“You can use deadly force to defend yourself or your property if you have reason to believe you could be injured or killed,” said Cummings.

Before he was killed, Piercy also allegedly threatened to harm several other people around downtown.

The prosecutor said while the shooting had a tragic outcome, so far it does not appear to be a criminal homicide.

“I mean this is one where someone defended himself and it could have been worse had he not had a gun, but gun violence is really over the top in the community and this town,” said Cummings.

In a press release on Thursday, Anderson police confirmed it’s believed that an altercation between the two individuals led to the shooting. At present, no arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.

Staff at north Topeka business shoot individual in response to alleged threats

TOPEKA (KSNT) – Police say staff at a local business shot a dangerous individual Wednesday in north Topeka.

Rosie Nichols with the City of Topeka told 27 News in a written statement officers with the Topeka Police Department (TPD) were called just after 11 p.m. on July 10 to a shooting in the 200 block of NW Independence Avenue. Law enforcement was told an individual entered a local business after it had closed for the day.

The individual allegedly pulled out a weapon and began threatening staff. This prompted staff to shoot the individual who then fled the area, eventually arriving at a local hospital.

Nichols said the individual is in stable condition and that officers have made contact with everyone involved in the incident. The investigation into this matter is ongoing.
