And in strict gun control Canada….

Here’s what we know so far about the B.C. school shooting
10 people dead, including suspect, and 25 others injured after mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge, B.C.

Police say nine people were killed and at least 25 more were injured after a mass shooting in the community of Tumbler Ridge, B.C., on Tuesday.

The sole suspect was found dead inside the school from “a self-inflicted injury,” according to police.

Here’s what we know so far about one of the deadliest school shootings in Canadian history.

When did it start?

An RCMP statement says police were initially called to Tumbler Ridge Secondary School on Tuesday around 1:20 p.m. local time.

B.C. Premier David Eby told reporters that police officers reached the school within two minutes.

A video showed students walking out of the school with their hands raised as police vehicles surrounded the building and a helicopter circled overhead.

Thousands of people were ordered to shelter in place after police issued an active shooter alert for the rural community and the surrounding area.

Residents were locked down until the alert was officially cancelled at 5:45 p.m. PT.

What we know about the victims

Six victims were found dead inside the high school and another died on the way to the hospital, according to authorities.

Police have not released details about the victims’ identities, including their ages, citing privacy and a need to confirm and notify families first, as is standard practice in British Columbia.

The provincial government website lists Tumbler Ridge Secondary School as having 175 students in Grades 7 to 12.

Darian Quist, a Grade 12 student at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, and his mother, Shelley Quist, spoke to Radio West host Sarah Penton. Darian described how he and his classmates barricaded the doors while the school was under lockdown. His mother, Shelley, said she stayed with Darian on the phone and could hear the moment police came to escort them to safety.

Two more people were found dead in a home, which police believe is connected to the school shooting.

Twenty-five others were injured in the shootings, including two who were airlifted to hospital with serious or life-threatening injuries. Details on the extent of injuries for the others have not been released at this time.

What we know about the suspect

RCMP Supt. Ken Floyd told reporters that investigators had identified a suspect, but would not immediately release a name. He also said the shooter’s motive remained unclear, adding that police are still investigating how the victims are connected to the shooter.

Police said they believe the suspected shooter found dead at the school is the same person described in the active shooter alert sent to phones in the area earlier today.

In an earlier alert Tuesday, police had described the suspect as “a woman in a dress with brown hair.”

How frequent are these shootings?

The shooting at the small, rural high school is the second deadliest school shooting in Canadian history, behind the massacre that left 14 dead at L’Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal on Dec. 6, 1989.

Five people were killed in a series of shootings in La Loche, Sask., on Jan. 22, 2016, including two at a community school.

Experts have attributed the rarity to Canada’s strict gun laws, which make it difficult to own assault-style weapons that have been used in school shootings in the U.S.

Where is Tumbler Ridge?

The shootings took place in the rural community in northeastern B.C., known mostly for its mining industry and geological history.

Nestled in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies, Tumbler Ridge is about 660 kilometres northeast of Vancouver, near the border with Alberta, and home to about 2,400 people, according to the 2021 census.
