Cleveland resident fatally shoots alleged burglar

CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Division of Police is investigating the shooting death of a 40-year-old man.

Officials responded to a home in the 3300 block of East 137th Street around 9: 20 a.m. for a call indicating a burglary and shooting. At the scene, the victim found shot inside the home and later died at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center. He has since been identified as Lavar Overton.

Witnesses tell police Overton had broken into the home and was fatally shot by the resident, also a 40-year-old man. Police say Overton was a former tenant at the home, but had no connections to the current occupant.

The resident left the location after the shooting, but later turned himself in to police. He was questioned and released.
