1572 – At Herrevad Abbey monastery near Ljungbyhed in present day Sweden, astronomer Tycho Brahe observes what is now classed as SN 1572 a type Ia supernova, in the constellation B Cassiopeia. Later publishing a book titled De nova stella (the New Star) about his sighting, the term ‘Nova’ for what is now known as an exploding star, not beginning it’s lifespan, but ending it.

1620 – The Mayflower Compact is signed at Provincetown Harbor near Cape Cod.

1673 – Using rocketry to good effect, Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth forces under the command of Jan Sobieski defeat an Ottoman army led by Husein Pasha and take the Khotyn fortress in what is now western Ukraine

1778 – A Loyalist and Seneca Indian force numbering over 600, attack the fort and village of Cherry Valley, in central New York, during the Revolutionary War, killing more than 40 civilians and soldiers.

1813 – During the War of 1812 near Crysler’s Farm, British and Canadian forces defeat a larger American force, causing the Americans to abandon the Saint Lawrence campaign.

1831 – In Virginia, Nat Turner is hanged after being convicted of murder and inciting a slave uprising.

1839 – The Virginia Military Institute is founded in Lexington, Virginia.

1889 – The State of Washington is admitted as the 42nd state of the United States.

1918 – At at 5:45 a.m Paris Time (UTC +1), aboard a railroad car in Compiègne forest France, the Allied Entente & German delegations sign an armistice, ceasing all hostilities between the parties,  to take effect at 11:00 a.m. Paris Time.

1921 – The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is dedicated by President Harding at Arlington National Cemetery.

1923 – Adolf Hitler was arrested in Munich, charged with high treason for his role in the Beer Hall Putsch.

1926 – The United States Numbered Highway System is established, with most north to south highways odd numbered, the lowest numbers in the east and the highest in the west, while east to west highways are typically even numbered, with the lowest numbers in the north, and the highest in the south, with many exceptions.

1940 –  During World War II at Taranto, Italy, the Royal Navy launches the first all aircraft ship to ship naval attack.

1965 – United Air Lines Flight 227, a Boeing 727, crashes short of the runway at Salt Lake City International Airport, killing 43 of the 91 passengers and crew aboard.

1966 – NASA launches the final Gemini mission, Gemini 12.

1967 – In a propaganda ceremony during the Vietnam War, 3 American prisoners of war are released by the Viet Cong in Phnom Penh, Cambodia and turned over to “new left” antiwar activist Tom Hayden.

1993 – A sculpture honoring the women who served in the Vietnam War is dedicated at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.

2004 – The moslem terrorist Palestine Liberation Organization confirms the death of Yasser Arafat from unidentified causes.
